Temporomandibular joint (TMJ)

Temporomandibular joint is the element joining the jawbone to the skull. This is definitely one of the most complex joints in our body. It is connected with lots of muscles, ligaments, nerves and blood vessels. TMJ is responsible for the proper jaw opening, so it is needed in everyday activities such as speaking, eating, singing or chewing a gum.

Improper functioning of TMJ. What are the symptoms?

If you struggle with the following symptoms:

  • frequent headaches
  • ear aches and tinnitus
  • bruxism (teeth grinding)
  • clicking sound while opening the jaw
  • limited jaw mobility
  • falling out of tooth fillings
  • pain in the neck and tension in the back
  • incorrect posture
  • hypertrophy of masseter and temporalis muscles

it might be caused by improper TMJ functioning.

Reasons for disfunctions

There may be plenty of reasons for improper TMJ functioning. The most common are: malocclusion, missing teeth, muscle overload, incorrect posture, head or skull injuries or even stress.

Stages of treatment

TMJ treatment is divided into the following stages:

  • Consultation appointment, interview with a Patient followed by manual examination of muscles and joints
  • Additional examinations e.g. axiographic examination, blood tests, laryngologist consultation
  • Diagnosis and treatment plan: TMJ splint therapy, physiotherapy, and aesthetic medicine
  • Orthodontic treatment

At the end of TMJ treatment our Patients can enjoy correct occlusion.

Digital axiography

JIt’s a digital examination that records jaw movements in order to diagnose temporomandibular joint. Axiography deeply analyses how our jaw functions and detects its disfunctions. This examination consists of static and dynamic occlusion analysis. Thanks to this examination we receive all necessary data to design individual TMJ splint which corrects all disfunctions by proper balance put on every jaw muscle and tooth.
